Salzburg is a very traditional city. Nevertheless, you see a lot of contemporary art in the streets. E.g. the “Gurken” (Gherkins) created by the Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. I like this piece of public art as the pickles seem to have some personality.
Walk of Modern Art
The “Gherkins” by Erwin Wurm form a station along the Walk of Modern Art in the city of Salzburg. On invitation by the Salzburg Foundation, twelve artists enriched the city centre with their works. All works were privately funded by the entrepreneur Reinhold Würth. So, this art is public but not public-funded.
Austrian artist Erwin Wurm
Erwin Wurm was born in the Austrian city of Bruck an der Mur in 1954. He created a lot of sculptures, making spectators smile as well as thoughtful. He loves to expand the term sculpture. For example, I saw a tiny house on top of a museum: “House Attack“.
Friedrich Schiller and Gherkins
By the way, the monument in the background is dedicated to Friedrich Schiller. I wonder what he think about the individuality of gherkins.
