At first glance, the Carnuntinum Roman Museum in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg looks like a villa rustica. In fact, it was only opened in 1904. It houses artefacts from the Roman town of Carnuntum and is regarded as the biggest Roman museum in Austria. [German]
Carnuntinum Roman Museum
The museum’s rich treasure trove of artefacts comprises several former private collections. The exhibits range from militaria to the simplest household utensils. Changing special exhibitions complement the permanent presentations.
One of the permanent exhibits on the ground floor is the reconstruction of an altar from the cult of Mithras. Spotlights immerse the stones in the presumed colours of the cult object. An interactive monitor describes the meaning of the images on the altar in detail.
The Lapidarium of the Carnuntinum
After visiting the Carnuntinum, I recommend taking a look at the lapidarium. This is located in a covered area on the courtyard side of the museum. The stones are labelled in detail and are an exciting source of knowledge about life in Roman times.
