An electric locomotive built in 1925/26. The nickname of this class of locomotives is ‘Austrian Crocodile’. These locomotives used to drive heavy trains along the mountain routes of Austria.

Trenčín Electric Railway
On a sunny spring day, I made a trip with the Trenčín Electric Railway from Trenčianska Teplá to the Slovakian spa Trenčianske Teplice. I was surprised to hear that the announcements on the train loudspeaker ran in Slovakian, English, and German!
Railway museum in Ampflwang
Me and two steam locomotives at the railway museum Ampflwang. This photo reminds me of how huge these steam locomotives really are. The museum is actually a collection of locomotives but also a museum for mining. A short railroad connects the museum with the public railroad and is open for special trips with old locomotives and coaches.
Chiemsee Railway in Prien
It is pretty old: The Chiemsee Railway (Chiemseebahn) dates back to 1887. Though this railway doesn’t exactly meet the definition of a tramway, it is considered the oldest still operating steam tramway in the world.
A train delay is a matter of language
While waiting for the delayed train to Hanau I realized that the exact delay of a train is a matter of language.
Bischofshofen Railway Station
On my rail trips through Austria, I often change the train in Bischofshofen. That’s a railway station in the middle of the mountains of the Austrian state of Salzburg. The mountain range in the background is named Tennengebirge.
Waiting for the opposite train
The charm of travelling single-track railways in Austria is that while waiting for the opposite train, you can watch cattle grazing in a lovely landscape. I took this photo at a siding between Stainach and Schladming in the Austrian state of Styria.
Steam locomotive BR 52.1227 in Graz
While waiting in the red train at the right side of the photo a huge steam locomotive stopped next to me. It was built in 1944 and one of the so-called war locomotives of the DRB Class 52. Well, I left my train on the spot taking this photo.
