The memorial site to Ernst Abbe reminded me more of a temple than a simple monument. A look through the glass door increased the impression. The dainty image of the industrialist and social reformer Ernst Abbe rested on a massive herm. [German]
Ernst Abbe Monument in Jena
The monument stands not far away from the former Zeiss Factory. Ernst Abbe designed optical lenses for the microscopes produced by this company. Next to the site, you also find the Optical Museum Jena (Deutsches Optisches Museum Jena).
The monumental building saw its opening in 1911. It was planned by Henry van de Velde. Constantin Meunier made the four bronze plaques. The herm was created under the hands of Max Klinger.
The room with the big herm was locked by heavy bronze doors. A glass front behind the doors made a glimpse of the monument possible. This restricted view and the brightness of a light dome made me think of standing on the threshold of a temple.
