The Getreidegasse is the most famous lane of Salzburg. The alley is known for a plethora of wrought iron guild signs, worth a look. Even an American fast-food chain uses a classic house sign above its entrance. [German]
Getreidegasse (“Grain Lane”)
Literally translated, the name Getreidegasse means Grain Lane. The connection to grain is but yet wrong. In the beginning, the alley was named Trabegasse. The German verb traben means “to trot”.
Mozart’s Birthplace
Visitors of the Getreidegasse also learn about traditional shops and notable people. The probably most famous home is Mozart’s Birthplace. The building serves as a museum now and gives valuable insights into the living style of Mozart’s family.
The Through-Houses
Personally, I love the through-houses connecting the Getreidegasse with parallel lanes. Entering such a building, you find a lot of shops, cafés and galleries in small inner yards. And at the end of such a building, you are in a street with a different ambience.
