Hainburg an der Donau

Hainburg an der Donau is considered the easternmost city in Austria. Its location on the Porta Hungarica made it a historically significant border city for centuries. A well-preserved 13th-century town wall with many towers still bears witness to this today. [German]

The town wall of Hainburg

Hainburg an der Donau is one of Lower Austria’s walled towns. And rightly so. The 2.5-kilometre-long town wall stretches almost intact around the entire town and up to the castle. However, it is not equally visible everywhere. Sometimes, the residents of a private house or hotel have a better view of it.

The three gates of Hainburg

Three gates from the medieval town fortifications have been preserved. And here, Hainburg offers a sensation. The Wienertor (Vienna Gate) is considered the tallest town gate in Europe. Where the guards used to point their weapons at potential attackers is now home to the Wienertor City Museum, which is worth a visit.

The Fischertor (Fisherman’s Gate) and the Ungartor (Hungarian Gate) are also worth a visit. The Fischertor once connected the Old Town with the Danube bank, where the freshly caught fish entered the city. The Ungartor, on the other hand, guarded the way to the east. Today, instead of a gatekeeper, it houses an entire scout group, the Viribus Unitis Sea Scouts.
