This water basin for washing horses (Pferdeschwemme) stands next to Sigmund’s Gate (Sigmundstor). The basin, generally known as Hofmarstallschwemme, was designed and built in 1693 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.
The sculpture named “Horse Tamer” was created by Michael Bernhard Mandl, and the frescoes were made by Josef Ebner. Another interesting detail: The Sigmund’s Gate nearby leads into the oldest street tunnel in Austria.
