On my walk from the railway station of Traunkirchen to the town centre, I came across this vintage place-name sign. The Austrian State of Upper Austria (Oberösterreich) is still labelled as crown land (Kronland).
The message of this sign
There are a lot of terms on this sign. The most relevant info is in the last line: You are in Winkl. The other lines explain in which administrative division of Austria this place is situated.
Winkl is part of the Gemeinde (municipality) Traunkirchen. The responsible Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district commission) is located in Gmunden. Gmunden is a city in the Austrian State of Upper Austria (Oberösterreich).
The age of this sign
The most intriguing detail on this old sign is the term Kronland (crown land). This detail revealed to me this sign was established before 1918. Until then, Austria wasn’t a Federal Republic of nine states but a monarchy divided into several crown lands.
