An interesting item on the program of the Karlstag 2009 was a Tableau Vivant. A group of people walked in the dresses of the time before 1900 around the Karlsplatz.
Musikverein Building in Vienna
At the Musikverein Building, the Vienna New Year’s Concert takes place. Taking a guided tour, I had the chance to get explained all the architectural details and sculptures of the large concert hall, which is known worldwide by the annual TV broadcast of this concert.
Parade of miners wearing an ‘Arschleder’
An interesting detail seen at a celebration for miners in Leoben. The miners are wearing a so called ‘Arschleder’ (German), also known as breech leather or miner’s apron. It served to keep the seat of the trousers from wearing out when sliding down to the tunnels as well as keeping out the cold and moisture when sitting.
Dodge WC53 in Vienna
I saw this Dodge WC53 at a classic car show in Vienna. This event took place next to the Museum of Military History (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum).
Lucius’ house in Carnuntum
The building is a reconstruction of the home of a middle-class citizen of the ancient Roman Carnuntum. His name was probably Lucius Maticeius Clemens. The reconstruction shows the house in the style of the first half of the 4th century.
Roman sewer cover in Petronell-Carnuntum
While walking through the archaeology park of Carnuntum, I found this reconstruction of a Roman sewer cover. It is much smaller than the one I saw in the Roman Museum of Vienna.
Yellow Ring Tram of Vienna
The first district of Vienna is surrounded by a circle street called ‘The Ring’. Taking the yellow ‘Ring Tram’ is like taking a guided tour. The installed audio system explains in eight languages the buildings along the Ring. E.g. the Parliament Building, the Vienna State Opera and the Hofburg.
Update: The Ring Tram stopped their service with the beginning of the corona pandemic.
Haydnhaus in Vienna
The Haydnhaus in Vienna is where the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn spent his last years. The museum inside explains how Haydn lived in this period and shows several pieces of his former household. A reconstructed garden completes the offer.
Garden gnome at Pöstlingberg in Linz
During my visit at Pöstlingberg, a lookout of Linz, it rained cats and dogs. Even the garden gnome, who I asked for the way to Pöstlingberg Mansion (Pöstlingberg Schlössl), carried an umbrella to protect himself. [German]
Pöstlingberg Railway in Linz
The Pöstlingberg Railway (Pöstlingbergbahn) links the main square of Linz with the Pöstling Hill (Pöstlingberg), which offers a great view of the city. The Pöstlingbergbahn is known as one of the world’s steepest adhesion-only railways.
Monument to Mozart in Vienna
This monument to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stands in the Burggarten in Vienna. The Burggarten is a public park at the rear of the New Hofburg (Neue Hofburg). The monument, made of Laas marble, was created by Viktor Oskar Tilgner.
Postbus Saurer 5GF-U in Vienna
This motor coach started to serve as public bus in 1962. At that time it was operated by the Austrian national postal delivery company. The brand colour of this company is yellow.
