A protective building in the style of an ancient Roman sanctuary shelters the remains of the Mithras Shrine III in Ptuj. The shrine was erected in the sixties of the 3rd century by soldiers of the Legio XIII Gemina.
Poetovio, the ancient Ptuj
The first Latin name of Ptuj was Poetovium. After receiving the city status from Emperor Trajan, the complete name of the Roman settlement turned into Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio.
Five Mithras Shrines in Poetovio
Archaeologists found on the grounds of Poetovio no less than five Mithras Shrines. This high density of shrines goes back to the large number of Roman soldiers in this city. For example, the base camp of the Legio XIII Gemina was in this place for many years.
