The Linzergasse is, after the Getreidegasse, the second most famous shopping street in Salzburg. In the past, several gates secured this access lane. Today, the Linzertor Mural reminds pedestrians of one of these gates named Linzertor.
Linzertor in Salzburg
The gate bore many names. On the mural, it is titled Linzertor. But it was also known as Inneres Linzertor (Inner Linz Gate). Another name was St. Sebastianstor. This version referred to the Saint Sebastian relief that decorated the gate. Today, this relief is an exhibit in the Salzburg Museum.
Regarding dates, the Linzertor was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century and demolished in 1894. Markus Sittich von Hohenems commissioned this gate as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg.
