The fortress in Croatian Varaždin impresses with its location in a green belt. Like a fairytale castle, the white walls rise above a former moat. Where water built a barrier in earlier times, strollers enjoy their walks. [German]
Stari Grad Fortress
The genuine name of the Varaždin Fortress is “Stari Grad”, which literally means “The Old Town”. At its core the stronghold looks more like an erratically built castle. It became a fortress only in the 16th century. At that time, a moat and mighty bastions appeared. The latter is still visible as an elevation in the green strip around the building.
City Museum in the Castle
Today the Stari Grad Castle houses the city museum. The museum tells, among other things, about the history of the free royal city. Cultural-historical objects are grouped according to stylistic epochs. A total of around 40 rooms are open to the museum visitor.
The Castle Road
The Varaždin Fortress including its City Museum is a member of the Castle Road. This road connects castles in the Austrian states of Styria and Burgenland with stately buildings in Slovenia and Croatia.
