This water tower in Mannheim is the landmark of the Quadratestadt (Square City). You find it on Frederick Square (Friedrichsplatz). It was built according to plans by Gustav Halmhuber in 1886-1889. [German]
Architect Gustav Halmhuber
Gustav Halmhuber was only 23 years old at the time of the competition for planning this water tower. Personally, I love his way of architecture. The tower reminds me strongly of an ancient Roman monument.
City of Squares
The nickname of Mannheim is Quadratestadt (Squares City). This title originates from the streets in the town centre, which form a grid pattern. That way, Mannheim is considered a planned city. A status it shares with other German places like Karlsruhe and Erlangen.
