Roman fort Biriciana in Weißenburg, Germany

The Roman fort Biriciana, nowadays known as Kastell Weissenburg, was occupied by cavalry units during ancient times. The photo shows the reconstructed north gate (Porta decumana) of the fort area. In Roman times, this gate led to the Limes. [German]

The website of the Weissenburg Museums [DEU] describes details about the visible Roman traces in the city area. These include the Weissenburg thermal baths, the fort grounds, and the Roman Museum.

The Roman Museum [ENG] is a branch of the Archaeological Collection of the Bavarian State [ENG]. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the Weissenburg Treasure.
